Maybe Coffee Can Inspire Me

It’s early in the morning
I get up but I’m sleep-walking
My mind is still half-dreaming
As I stumble to the kitchen
Need to find some energy
Maybe coffee can inspire me
Staring at a blank page
Here I am, racking my brain
Can’t find the words I’m looking for
I'm sure they're knocking on my brain’s door
The door is locked apparently
Maybe coffee can inspire me
A heavenly scent fills the room
I close my eyes, my dream comes true
A magic potion so delicious
With milk froth like a sweet kiss
You might say it's liquid peace
I know it's been a short night
How am I supposed to write
The chords are all in outer space
Seems to be a hopeless chase
Need to find them in their galaxy
Maybe coffee can inspire me
The spark kicks in, I'm half-smiling
There seems to be a silver-lining
My brain's door is slightly open
It's no longer like a vacuum
Is this the end of my misery?
I hope coffee can inspire me
A heavenly scent fills the room
I close my eyes, my dream comes true
A magic potion so delicious
With milk froth like a sweet kiss
You might say it's liquid peace
The next time I'm lacking clarity
I know coffee will inspire me
I know coffee will inspire me
In this song I am exploring how coffee can break writer's block, something every writer experiences more often than they'd like. Coffee can do both - it gives you the necessary kick and at the same time a quiet coffee break gives you peace and reduces the anxiety that comes from the block. It just lets you take a moment to breathe. So, coffee is actually liquid peace that opens the mind when it's blocked. But there's another story behind the song:
In 2023 I took part in the Album Writing Club of the Lights & Lines label (lightsandlines.bandcamp.com). The challenge was to write and record an album in the month of May. I completed the challenge and released my demo album In Moments Like These. You can listen to it here: annikajayne.bandcamp.com/album/in-moments-like-these-demos-album
For some time, however, I was unable to come up with a title for the album. All the songs were written and the recordings were in progress - but the album title was missing. One day I was chatting to label boss and initiator of the Album Writing Club, Mike Five, on Twitter. I jokingly said that I was struggling to come up with an album title, but that maybe coffee could inspire me. Mike then suggested Maybe Coffee Can Inspire Me as the album title. We laughed about it, and I agree that it would be a good album title, but it didn't really fit in this case. But ever since then I wanted to write at least one song with that title! Seems like that chat inspired me!
