The Cats Are Indoors

It must be autumn,
The leaves are dancing
Make the world glow in orange and golden
The days are shorter
The wind’s getting colder
We make bouquets from leaves that have fallen
We enjoy the last of the light as the sun slowly withdraws
But here’s the best part of all
The cats are indoors

It must be autumn
Grinning pumpkins
Greet me like old friends from the front porches
And we get cozy
With biscuits and coffee
Pumpkin spice latte is now one of my choices
We read books under blankets and hide from rain and from storms
But here’s the best part of all
The cats are indoors

They’ve been hunting all summer enjoying the sun
Trying to catch butterflies and having fun
Sleeping under the bushes to escape the heat
But now that summer's over, they're home in a heartbeat

It must be autumn
Squirrels are jumping
Little acrobats preparing for winter
We wear comfy sweaters
We cuddle together
To keep out the cold while the clouds linger
We turn on the heating, make sure we stay inside these walls
But here’s the best part of all
The cats, too, are indoors
They come and cuddle some more
The cats, too, stay indoors
The cats are indoors

In 2021, we adopted two cats, Alexa and Juno. They had been abandoned by their mother and were only 8 weeks old when they moved in. Half a year later they were allowed to go outside for the first time. When summer came, they stayed out all day, only coming home briefly to eat. In late September it started to get colder, so they came home more often. I often thought to myself "it must be autumn because the cats are indoors". So the song was born. When writing the song, I included many other autumnal elements as autumn is my favourite season. But the best part of all is still that the cats are indoors.

Unfortunately, Juno was hit by a car in June 2024. She was badly injured and sadly, she didn't make it. So from now on it will be just one cat that will be indoors in autumn. I miss Juno every day. May she rest in peace.
