By Your Side

© Music and Lyrics by Annika Jayne

A candle in the night
Is lightening up the room
There's a storm outside
Clouds are covering the moon
It's also raining in my mind
The wind is howling, leaves me blind
How can life be so unkind?

We could have been in love
The flowers were in bloom
We really could have hit it off
But you left Berlin in June
Time wasn't on our side
It wasn't for us to decide
Even if we had tried

It’s just another sad love story
When everything goes wrong
When two people are left so lonely
And all we have is just this song
Memories will be fading
But this melody is yours
In my heart, it will keep playing
No matter where the wind blows

As the morning breaks
Light is flooding the room
In the sun I see your face
Birds are singing a gentle tune
Send you a kiss, whisper goodbye
Blow it away, let it fly
And watch it reach the sky

It’s just another sad love story
When everything goes wrong
When two people are left so lonely
And all we have is just this song
Memories will be fading
But this melody is yours
In my heart, it will keep playing
No matter where the wind blows

Even though I can't turn the tide
Hope my kiss finds you alright
Wish I could be there by your side
Hold me tight
Hold me tight
By your side

By Your Side is a song I wrote in 1994 when I fell in love with a French guy called Stéphane. Sadly, he had to leave before we really had the chance to get together. In fact, there are now two versions of this song. There is the unplugged solo version and the duet version with Nathan Peter Illes which is available as a single or on the original Nostalgia EP.
